FUTURE lyrics~

Hello community~ ^^

Again I've spent some time with my eyebrows glued together, pondering on different meanings and phrasings and whatnot, and thus far I've been able to produce a (shaky?) translation of the lyrics of the two a-tracks of 1981~FUTURE~. The last track on the single - like the other 1981-singles - doesn't have lyrics printed for them, so every translation would only be speculative.

Alan e no Tegami (Letter to Alan)

(Original kanji)

Attempted English translation:
by yours truely :3

Letter to Alan (1

People don't die just because of war, terrorism, hunger, disease, natural disasters, crime and accidents
This is also "soothing", "just your imanigation" and "that's also a natural shing"
Under the footsteps of this world of opportunism where "unnecessary" things are instantly eliminated
There are people who die (2

Yes, there are people whose talent has been killed
there are people whose destinations have been snatched away
there are people who can not regain themselves
there are people who have lost even their parents
there are people who don't get into contact with society
there are people who are being sold under money and power

There are people who can't forget about that pain and suffering

This isn't things like volunteers or cheering parties or sense of justice
The important things exist always right at our feet
Regarding all that, I'm playing this music

Now, the things I sing about, now, if I wouldn't sing, what on earth am I singing?
And in a basement where even rain doesn't fall, I'm burning Mother Teresa's books (3

Limitless and endless vanity, imagination gushing forth like a spring
Hysteric passion, dreams that catch even streaming clouds
And phantasmagoric curiosity, those are the provisions that thrust me into tomorrow
If I have only this much, I can live on, I thought

Things like "What do you want to do?"
Is like counting eyelashes
To me, that's an outrageously cheap thing
Like thinking about "Who killed Christ?"
Like that anti-war poster
That's in an outrageously sorrowful situation...
This unenclosed distance is like a roleplaying game without an adviser
Like a game of Adam and Eve
If so, I'll replace that with a dream world by singing
No, I must continue singing
Yes, because that is worthless in this world
If it can be finished by a tiny hero
This is also "a foolish dream" and "a tragedy"
If it's like that, "I don't need a tomorrow"
And there are signs saying "This world's tomorrow is already gone"
And, before feeling that there is "no future"
Before you have to get it over with by masturbating
Before you have to look for freedom in darkness
In a night where you will die if you lose focus
In a morning that seems to be completely destroyed
In a noon that seems to be devoured by darkness
Wouldn't you try to hear the "inaudible sound" blowing in the wind with me? (4 & (5
And now that I remembered shouting as loud as I can
Nevertheless, we are searching for a shapeless "daze" (5
"Wagering everything for the sake of one single day"
Let's keep on running

Even if we're spitting on a starless sky, just what can be saved like that? (6
The thing I want is a living, certain proof that me and the world are connected

Now, the things I sing about, now, if I wouldn't sing, what on earth am I singing about...

Translator's notes:

1) I think this Alan would be Alan Merrill, if it is a real person at all. (Yes, I actually went through the list of all people in Wikipedia whose name is Alan...)

2) I think he means by losing the will to live, which would possibly end in suicide. Because when you rule out all those things in line 1, what else is there left, really? o_o

3) a) I'm not sure whether this should be "the basement" instead of "a basement", since I think we're talking about the same basement as in Maniatte Imasunde...
b) The verb used for the action regarding Mother Teresa's books is indeed to burn, bake, get a tan or grill. I did my best in looking for some other meaning to it, but didn't find anything. Well, burning Mother Teresa's books is certainly a statement. o_O

4) In lack of better wording for "minai ka"...

5) "that shapeless 'daze'" and "inaudible sound" are things YOSK has mentioned in his lyrics & journal before. The daze seems to be some kind of ecstasy which he wishes to find in this life. (But obviously by other means than using drugs :p) Perhaps, by hearing this inaudible sound...?

6) I believe this is a reference to the phrase "spitting at the ceiling", as in doing nothing.

Overall, this song was a bitch to translate is very YOSK-ish, and ponders on the general situation of the world and the person's place in it. (Wow for summaries. XD)

(attempted translation)
by ... ME! >:3 & brilliant assistance from conpeitou

My Name Is...

As promised, night has come
It feels as if I'm watching a boring movie, maybe

The everydays that grow numb... The moments that grow numb...
The weight of words will not lose to the weight of song (1

It seems to be rotten inside my head (2

My name is searching for a new trick (3
searching for the everydays that grow numb
This isn't just a mere game
I know it

Even though I don't even know myself
why do I say that much about strangers
An illusion... (4

It seems to be rotten inside my head

My name is searching for a new trick
searching for the everydays that grow numb
This isn't just a mere game
I know it

Translator's notes:

1) I think "omosa" can only be translated as weight, but I think it's meant here as "impact" or the sorts.

2) I'm sorry if this line is confusing. It's meant as "everything inside the head seems to be rotten", not as a certain "it" is rotten. Would there be a better way of saying this?

3) "kokyuu" can mean many things, but judging by the context etc. other YOSK-ish factors, I think it means knack here.

4) Because there is only "gensou" written on the last line of this verse, I don't know for certain whether it is in the same "sentence" as the line above. I assumed it's not. >_>;

Every time I look at these lyrics, I feel like there's something missing. o_o I mean, they're so... short! And... fairly simple! What! But the song itself is nice. ^^ I think it is in the same theme with Letter to Alan. :o

Corrections, suggestions and generally all comments are welcome. :3

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.
It's great to have a Japanese fandom with people who have a strong grasp of the Japanese and English language!!!
"Alan e no Tegami" is my favourite of 1981~FUTURE~. I knew it was powerful of some sort XD. The melody's also great, and singing for once :].
I've never heard of Alan Merril before. Based in Tokyo :o?
It was nice of you to go through all the Alans XDDD;;;.
You are very very welcome~! ^^

Now, I'm very aware of the fact that I'm not a native English speaker and only semi-fluent in Japanese, but... THAT WON'T STOP ME!! If there's a set of great lyrics/text somewhere in my fandom, I WILL BRING IT OUT TO THE PUBLIC! *roars* >:O

And it's fun. XD

I've heard of Alan Merrill maybe... twice...? But I never knew he had been making music in Japan... o_o And they say fandom isn't useful!
自分の事も知らないクセに
    他人の事ばかり なぜそこまで言える

I don't have time to comment on all of this, but this part, I'm fairly certain, means: 'Even though I don't know myself/why can I say that much much about strangers'. 'Kuse ni' always means that, e.g., 自分は日本人の癖に日本語を完ぺきに使いこなせてないのも現実です.(Goo.ne.jp, of course, can explain 'kuse/kuse ni' better than I can.)

Thank you for posting your translations! It's really helpful, and it makes me reconsider my interpretations. I'll comment on this more later, if that's OK?
Oh, it's that way? I checked goo's dictionary too, and understood it from there the way I've seen it used before, like if talking about a poor girl trying to come off as a rich chick, you could say "金持ちくせに・・・" Isn't Japanese phrase disposition in song lyrics great? >_>;

Yes, of course it's OK, I'm only happy if I can learn from my mistakes~ :D (Even if it would be the second third fourth time in a row making that same damn mistake...)
Oh, it's that way? I checked goo's dictionary too ...

I can't see that meaning at all in the Goo entry -- that entire definition (both senses 1 and 2) has a connotation of 非難, it's like a negative version of 'のに'. I checked my 文型辞典, too, and it doesn't give 'pretend to be something' as a definition, either. I can copy out the page on くせに・くせにして・そのくせ, if you like. This dictionary I have, it explains concepts rather well. So, I'm pretty sure that part does say 'Even though I don't even know myself/why do I say that much about strangers'.

たいしておもしろくない映画を見ている気分、多分

I think this part is something like, 'It feels as if I'm watching a boring movie, maybe'. 'kibun' usually means that something has a certain feel to it. For example, I often come across 小旅行気分 in blog entries about (non-school-related) trips, like in this blog. Googling for specific instances of 映画を見てる気分: (1) (2) ( Search for 自宅で映画を見てる気分でしたよ。)

is searching for a new knack

I think your translation is correct, but I think that 'knack' is a bad way to put it. It sounds awkward, and 'knack' is usually used to refer to something specific, e.g, 'I've got a knack for carpentry.'

'New trick, 'new secret method', 'new skill', one of those, maybe?

there are people who can not regain theirselves

Nothing wrong with your translation (I think your translation of 'Alan e no Tegami' is perfect), but 'theirselves' is poor English. It should be 'themselves'. Er, if you're aiming for standard English. 'Theirselves' is correct in some English dialects.

You know, it occurs to me that 'Boku no Namae' could be about the Hikikomori phenomenon. It might just be me, though, but the song reminds me of the personal accounts of Hikikomori that I've read.
Sorry, that's the wrong kanji there. 修学旅行, that's what it should be. *headdesk* -_-;
I checked my 文型辞典, too...

And I found one online, and NOW I get it. :O You were right all along, I was wrong. x) I probably mixed it up with 振りをする... elementary, dear Watson, I know. >_>;

'It feels as if I'm watching a boring movie, maybe'.

Checked your links and so it seems to be. Correcting~ ^^

'New trick, 'new secret method', 'new skill', one of those, maybe?

'secret method' sounds like there's something fishy going on... XD At least to my ear. 'New trick' might do the... uh, trick. XD;

... but 'theirselves' is poor English. It should be 'themselves'.

Yes, ma'am. ^^;

And now that you mention it, I can see how Boku no Namae could be about hikikomori. Maybe Sakkan has had some close experiences on this, who knows. The man is a riddle. o_o

(I think your translation of 'Alan e no Tegami' is perfect)

☆☆☆!! That made me so happy! :D ...although wtf, so many errors on Boku no Namae which was supposed to be short & simple, and zero mistakes on the bitch that is Alan e no Tegami? Life is horrible. XD

Thank you again for your corrections and suggestions. ^___^ Teamwork is fantastic on cases like these, no? :3
And I found one online,

I think you might have also been confused because sometimes 'pretend' is used to translate phrases using くせに: e.g., second sentence on this page.

I'm glad my suggestions could help. I wonder if he does know someone who is a hikikomori, or if he even had the tendency, though I doubt the latter since he's such a bouncy and positive person overall. Maybe he's just talking about the hikikomori mindset generally, since it seems to be quite a crisis in Japan. I mean, the NHK even has a help page for hikikomori....

Boku no Namae which was supposed to be short & simple, and zero mistakes on the bitch that is Alan e no Tegami?

I think it's because there was so much content to 'Alan'. I mean, in Japanese, the thing I find most vexing is the continuous omission of whatever can be understood from context. 'Boku no Namae' tended more toward that kind of thing than 'Alan', which was, to me, very explicit (in both senses of the word, perhaps). Er, at least that's how I look at it.

Oh, one last thing RE: 呼吸 in 'boku no namae', I think that it might not be 'new trick', I think it may be in reference to breathing ... though I'm not sure yet. I'm going to do an extensive amount of cross-referencing and Googling and whatever else I can possibly do to verify the translation.
I mean, the NHK even has a help page for hikikomori....

Yes, well, NHK also has the anime show "Welcome to NHK!" which deals with hikikomori, methinks. And in my humble opinion, if something gets published like that, it must be fairly mainstream.

I think it may be in reference to breathing ...

Well, I tried to think every possible way it COULD be breathing instead of trick, because I've heard 呼吸 used more often as breathing. (But as we already know, that proves nothing. XD) Good luck with your googling though, I hope you find some proof~ :o

Deleted comment

Because he's an artist? >_>;; I kind of wish they would be more simple, because most of the time they make a translator like me want to bang my head against a wall so that I can STOP SPECULATING OVER DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS of some god damned line!! /vent XD

But you are very very very welcome~ :D I'm happy when someone finds my scribbles helpful~ x3
